National team training camps in Japan ahead of this summer's Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games have been cancelled because of the coronavirus pandemic.

Colombia's table tennis and gymnastics teams were due to hold training camps in Kitakyushu, a city in the Fukuoka Prefecture, reports NHK.

The decision to cancel the camps in the city, the most northerly on Kyushu Island, was taken by the teams.

Meanwhile, China's gymnastics team has been asked to cancel its training camp in Sabae City in Fukui Prefecture.

The camp was due to take place in April but the request for the cancellation has been made by the city because of the ongoing coronavirus pandemic.

Britain's wheelchair basketball team was scheduled to hold a camp in Urayasu City but cancelled because of concerns over health care for the players.

The camp in the city, which is in the Chiba Prefecture, was also supposed to be held next month.

Meanwhile, various events and projects to promote exchanges between foreign athletes and local residents have been cancelled or postponed in nearly 60 municipalities throughout Japan, reports NHK.

This includes a project by Matsukawa Town in Nagano Prefecture to send high school students to Costa Rica.

The town is scheduled to host the Central American country's national team for a camp.

The International Olympic Committee (IOC) today announced following an Executive Board meeting that it would make a decision on the future of this summer's Olympic Games within the next four weeks.

The IOC said a postponement was being considered, but ruled out the prospect of cancelling the event.

A few hours later, details of a letter sent by World Athletics to the IOC were released.

In the letter, World Athletics requested that the Olympics were moved as it was "neither feasible nor desirable" to hold them on the scheduled dates because of the coronavirus pandemic.
