Usain Bolt's former coach Glen Mills has called for the International Olympic Committee (IOC) to postpone the Tokyo 2020 Olympics until 2021 due to the ongoing COVID-19 pandemic.

Mills, who coached Bolt during his illustrious career where he won eight Olympic gold medals and 11 world titles has said his athletes have been unable to train since Wednesday, in an interview with Reuters.

This comes after the Jamaican Health Ministry introduced measures that closed tracks and gyms to contain the spread of the virus with the nation having 19 confirmed cases to date.

"My recommendation would be to postpone the Olympics until next year," said Mills.

"This would be unprecedented, but we are in unprecedented times.

"Move everything up one year and then everything will eventually fall back in place.

"But I don't think that the Olympics will take place at the time that is specified because the outbreak is worldwide and in some countries, it is just starting to accelerate."

Mills' current athletes include two-time Olympic champion Yohan Blake as well as British pair Zharnel Hughes and Miguel Francis.

Worldwide, there are more than 290,000 confirmed cases resulting in over 11,900 deaths.
