The new building for Harajuku Station has been opened in the Japanese capital in time for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic and Paralympic Games.

The new station, on Japan's busy Yamanote loop line, is a two-story structure that straddles the train tracks and exits onto the precincts of Meiji Jingu Shrine and Omotesando Avenue, as reported by Kyodo News

Glass walls give the building a bright and modern feel, also offering a view of the old station and the tracks.

The old Western-style wooden station building, which was constructed nearly 100 years ago, will be dismantled after Tokyo 2020 due to its narrow shape and failure to meet fireproof standards.

Visitors will be able to use the new station during Tokyo 2020, although there are currently concerns the Games may be postponed or cancelled due to the ongoing coronavirus crisis.

More than 270,000 people have been infected worldwide, with more than 11,500 deaths.

A number of Olympic and Paralympic qualifying events have been called off or postponed, while some athletes are unable to train due to containment measures in their country.

Despite this, the International Olympic Committee has claimed there is no need for "any drastic decisions at this stage."
