Iranian futsal coach Ahmad Taheri has died of coronavirus, it has been announced.

According to the Tehran Times, Taheri had undergone surgery to remove a brain tumour four months ago.

This is believed to have led to a weak response from his immune system after contracting coronavirus.

Taheri previously served as the sporting director of the Iranian national futsal team.

He also had coaching roles at Bank Tejarat, Peyman and Esteghlal.

Iran has been one of the countries most impacted by the coronavirus outbreak, which has been declared a pandemic by the World Health Organization (WHO).

Iran has had the third highest number of confirmed cases worldwide, with over 17,000 confirmed.

Over 1,100 people have reported died in the country of coronavirus.

Only China and Italy have had more cases, with over 80,000 and 31,000 reported in the two countries, respectively.

A total of 208,221 coronavirus cases have now been recorded around the world, resulting in over 8,200 deaths.
