Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni and Ugandan Olympic Committee (UOC) President William Blick have been presented with Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa (ANOCA) awards for their contribution to sport.

ANOCA President Mustapha Berraf presented Museveni and Blick with the honours at the 55th ANOCA meeting, which took place in Kampala in Uganda.

Museveni was awarded the ANOCA Order of Merit at the meeting, with the continental body saying he had shown unwavering commitment to sport in the country.

His leadership is claimed to be "visionary and transformational".

"What is reviving sports and talent in Uganda is the recovery of the whole system and not just sports," Museveni said, according to Daily Monitor Uganda.

"We started with the army to guarantee peace and then worked with the private sector to revive the economy and the industrial sector.

"Because of this, we have been able to support social services, education and health.

"The population has grown and children live longer.

"It is these who are bringing up sports.

"We are going to have a few more stadiums.

"If we focus, we have a lot of potential.

"I know sports is good for stamina, builds resilience of character and good discipline."

Blick reportedly became the first National Olympic Committee President to receive an ANOCA Medal of Merit.

The award marked his service to the Olympic Movement.

He replaced Rogers Ddungu as UOC President in 2012 having served as vice-president under him, and his tenure is due to expire in 2021.

Blick became an International Olympic Committee (IOC) member in 2018.

He is currently among the members of a taskforce responsible for running the boxing tournament at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, as well as the qualification system for it.

The meeting in Uganda saw ANOCA back the IOC's commitment to Tokyo 2020, amid the coronavirus outbreak.
