David Barnes has been named on the Australian archery team for the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, ending a 16 year absence following an appearance at Athens 2004.

The 34-year-old made his Olympic debut in Athens, before taking a break from archery for more than a decade.

He returned to action in 2017 and is now set to compete at Tokyo 2020.

"It's an amazing feeling to be back at the Olympics," said Barnes, as reported by Illawarra Mercury.

"In Athens I was a teenager with nothing to lose and no real responsibilities.

"Fast forward to today and I'm a dad of two, running my own business, and just at a completely different stage of my life.

"I'm a lot more focused and efficient with my time now, to juggle training with everything else in my life.

"Knowing my kids will be able to see their dad compete at an Olympics is a great motivator."

Barnes will be joined in the Japanese capital by Ryan Tyack and Taylor Worth, who earned team bronze at Rio 2016.

It will be Tyack's second Olympics, while Worth is set to be featuring at his third Games.

Australia achieved Olympic qualification through a tie-break shoot off against Turkey at last year's World Archery Championships, with the trio earning their selection after a three-stage trial.

The Australian women's team have not yet earned a team quota spot for Tokyo 2020, but securing an individual berth at the Oceania Championships in Fiji next month would also allow Australia to contest the two-person mixed team event.

Archery action at Tokyo 2020 is due to take place at Yumenoshima Park from July 24 to August 1.
