Vietnam are aiming to qualify for their first Olympic Games as they take on Australia in the first leg of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women's Olympic Qualifying Tournament Playoff Round.

The Vietnamese side take on Australia at the McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle tomorrow, before returning home for the second leg in Cẩm Phả on Wednesday (March 11).

World number seven team Australia are considered the favourites, with Vietnam 25 places below them in the rankings.

Australia have also featured in three Olympics, reaching the quarter-finals at Athens 2004 and Rio 2016, while Vietnam are yet to appear at a Games.

Despite her team's underdog status, Vietnam's captain Huynh Nhu has appeared confident in the build-up to the first leg.

"It is hard to predict a football match but anything can happen before the final whistle," she said.

"Australia are a strong team, they have improved a lot over recent years.

"I have experiences of playing against them and I know their style of play.

"I want to work hard and showcase what I am capable of in each match.

"I hope luck is on our side and that we can make history by sealing our maiden Olympic qualification."

Australia thrashed Vietnam 8-0 when the two teams last played during the 2018 AFC Women's Asian Cup.

The overall winner of the two legs will book a place at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games, joined by either China or South Korea, who are contesting a second playoff match.
