Thailand's taekwondo star Panipak Wongpattanakit believes that she will be in peak condition in time for Tokyo 2020.

Olympic gold is the only major prize missing from the 22-year-old's collection, and the flyweight is confident heading into the under-49 kilograms competition in Japan.

Wongpattanakit is the reigning world champion having won gold last year in Manchester, and also won the global title in Chelyabinsk in 2015.

She also boats Asian, Asian Games, Universiade and Youth Olympic gold medals but the tournament in Tokyo will be the one which really counts.

"My aim is definitely the gold medal," Wongpattanakit, who won bronze at Rio 2016, said to the Bangkok Post.

"I was disappointed at the previous Olympics and that’s a lesson.

"If I am 100 per cent fit and do not have an injury, I am confident that I will return to Thailand with a gold medal.

"I am almost 100 per cent ready now.

"I think my physical condition will peak when the Games come."

Wongpattanakit's preparation for Tokyo 2020 has so far been far from ideal as a training camp in South Korea was cancelled due to coronavirus.

The Asian Championships in Beirut in Lebanon will also not take place.

In December, Wongpattanakit was named as female athlete of the year at the World Taekwondo Gala Awards in Moscow.
