New Zealand narrowly avoided an upset as they edged out Bangladesh in a low-scoring thriller at the Women's T20 World Cup in Melbourne.

In the first match between the two sides in international women's cricket, the Kiwis were bowled out for 91 but were clinical with the ball to earn a 17-run victory at the Junction Oval.

The win kept New Zealand's semi-final hopes alive and eliminated Bangladesh from the tournament.

New Zealand will face Australia on Monday (March 2), with the winner joining India - who topped Group A by defeating Sri Lanka - in the semi-finals.

Bangladesh gave themselves every chance of springing a surprise after they skittled New Zealand with 10 balls to spare.

Ritu Moni, making her first appearance at the tournament, ripped through New Zealand's middle order, taking 4-18, while captain Salma Khatun claimed 3-7.

New Zealand limped towards three figures but were bowled out nine runs short, raising the prospects of Bangladesh claiming a shock upset.

Bangladesh reached 31-2 before Nigar Sultana Joty had to be helped from the field after being hit on the helmet, and the incident somewhat slowed their momentum.

New Zealand's bowlers were disciplined and restricted Bangladesh's run rate before bowling them out for 74.

India secured top spot in Group A after thrashing Sri Lanka by seven wickets in the day's later game.

Spinner Radha Yadav claimed 4-23 as India limited Sri Lanka to 113-9 from their 20 overs.

Indian opener Shafali Verma laid the platform for a successful run chase by hitting 47 off 34 balls, while Jemimah Rodrigues and Deepti Sharma each added an unbeaten 15 to guide their team to victory with 32 balls to spare.

The tournament is set to continue tomorrow.
