Australia has named its sailors for the 49er and 49erFX competitions at the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Brothers Sam and Will Phillips will make their Olympic debuts in the 49er class and Jaime Ryan will team up with Tess Lloyd in the 49erFX.

Ryan competed at Rio 2016 alongside Carrie Smith in the women's 470, while Lloyd can also prepare for her first Games just eight years after undergoing brain surgery.

She was only 17 when she suffered a serious head injury on the water, leaving her in a three-week coma and putting her career at risk.

"It was such a relief and so exciting to get the call that I made the team," Lloyd said.

"I stuck to my guns and committed to this sailing career after a big scare, but the injury has made me the person I am today and made me so determined to make the Olympics.

"It was all very emotional when I got the call I made the team.

"The accident was such a huge thing for me and my family.

"Everything in my life was changing, but sailing was a respite – it came quite naturally and it felt easy being on the water when a lot of different parts of my life were a struggle."

Will Phillips said being selected alongside his brother was a "wonderful feeling" for his family.

"It's pretty special for the two of us – while it would be special to go to an Olympics with any sailing partner, it's even more special to go with my brother Sam," he said.

"Sam said it was a relief to get the call we made the team, but for me it was immediately looking forward to getting stuck in to the sailing aspect of it.

"That's the bit I enjoy, the learning and figuring out how to improve my craft."

Australia had already announced the Olympic sailing selections of Mathew Belcher and Will Ryan, Jaime's brother, in the men's 470 and Matt Wearn in the laser.

"Congratulations to Jaime, Tess, Sam and William on being selected to the Olympic team today," said Australia's Chef de Mission Ian Chesterman.

"It's exciting to see sailing put together such a world class team, and I look forward to seeing them take on the challenge in Tokyo."
