Jamaican athletes will hold training camps before Tokyo 2020 in Tottori in Japan, it has been announced.

The arrangement was confirmed by Japan's ambassador to Jamaica, Hiromasa Yamazaki.

Tottori, on the south-west of Japan's largest island Honshu, lies nearly 700 kilometres away from Tokyo.

It already has links with Jamaica as it has a twinning arrangement with Westmoreland, the Carribbean country's westernmost parish.

This was signed in 2015 with Tottori sending runners to Jamaica's Reggae Marathon every year since.

Jamaicans have also run in the Tottori Marathon.

"We expect that Jamaica will win many medals," Yamazaki said to the Jamaica Observer

"I also hope that many of you here will visit Tokyo for the Olympic and Paralympic Games."

As well as athletes, officials from the Jamaica Olympic Association will also be hosted in Tottori.

Jamaica won six gold medals at Rio 2016, which all came in their favoured sport of athletics.

Now-retired sprint legend Usain Bolt won three of them in the 100 metres, 200m and 4x100m relay.
