International Olympic Committee (IOC) President Thomas Bach has visited the International University Sports Federation (FISU) headquarters in Lausanne for the first time.

FISU's headquarters on the University of Lausanne campus were officially opened in April 2018.

IOC sports director Kit McConnell and Marina Baramia of the IOC President’s office accompanied Bach on his first visit.

"It’s always a pleasure to be among passionate leaders and young people committed to developing sport’s role in society," said Bach.

"FISU has clearly found the right place to call home, among the university students it serves here in the Olympic Capital."

Bach, a former Olympic fencing gold medallist, competed for West Germany at the 1973 World University Games in Moscow and the 1979 event in Mexico City.

He was welcomed to the office by FISU President Oleg Matytsin and secretary general Eric Saintrond.

"The IOC’s continued support of FISU has been of vital importance to the development of our university sports movement," Matytsin, recently appointed as Russia's new Sports Minister, said.

"We are particularly grateful for President Bach’s leadership in that support.

"Having a former Universiade competitor as the leader of the Olympic Movement is a perfect example of how future leaders can be shaped by their positive experiences of international university sport."

The visit took place during one of FISU's biannual Executive Committee meetings.

The upcoming hosts of the World University Games were also in attendance.

Lucerne is hosting the winter edition in 2021, while Chengdu is welcoming athletes for the summer edition of that year.

Lake Placid will then hold the Winter World University Games in 2023, with the event then going to Yekaterinburg in the summer.

Delegates from all four Organising Committees participated in FISU workshops, aimed at increasing the success of their marketing and communications efforts leading up to competition.
