Bouts at the rescheduled England Boxing National Youth Championships will take place behind closed doors after a mass brawl forced the abandonment of the event last weekend, it has been announced.

England Boxing confirmed the remaining bouts at the competition, which were postponed after four people were left hospitalised in violent scenes in Coventry, would be held in Birtley in the North East of the country.

The Championships began at Sports Connection Arena in Coventry on Friday (February 14), but were abandoned the following day.

Warwickshire Police were called to the venue following "large-scale violent disorder".

Video footage shared on social media appeared to show a bloodied man wielding an axe, a fire extinguisher being sprayed and chairs being thrown at people attending the event.

England Boxing has confirmed only boxers and coaches affiliated by the national governing body will be allowed access to the Birtley ABC venue.

"We were all shocked and saddened by events at Coventry that did not allow the England Boxing National Youth Championships to be boxed through to completion," England Boxing competitions and events manager Lynsey Lockey said.

"We are determined that boxers should still get the opportunity to box for the right to be a national champion after all the sacrifices they, their coaches, their clubs and their families have made to get them to this point."

Police have not yet made any arrests but are seeking information from anyone who may have witnessed the incident.
