The International Canoe Federation (ICF) has approved the timing, scoring and results systems for canoe sprint and canoe slalom ahead of the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

ICF technical delegates and headquarters staff participated in the testing in Japan's capital along with the Tokyo 2020 competition management teams for each discipline.

The teams provided a variety of regular and exceptional situations to test the processes and system capacity.

At the conclusion of the tests, the ICF expressed its confidence in the systems provided by Omega and Atos.

This included the updated format for canoe sprint, which allows two boats per National Federation to compete in each event, and the inclusion of women's canoe events in both sprint and slalom.

The staff and providers are said to have worked well alongside the International Olympic Committee's Olympic Results and Information Services team to define each case, follow the correct process and ensure the outcome was always produced as desired.

Along with the systems, the ICF also reviewed the online start lists and results format, and the in-venue scoreboards, to ensure the best possible experience for spectators, press, athletes and team personnel.

Additional items reviewed alongside the meetings included news outputs produced by the Olympic Information Service, sport entries and sports presentation.

The ICF, in conjunction with the Tokyo 2020 competition management and sports presentation teams, hopes to provide the best possible spectator experience with new innovations for participation.

While in Tokyo, the ICF team also completed site visits for both disciplines, with positive feedback about the progress and preparedness of the respective venues.

In March, the ICF intends to complete the testing for the Para-canoe competition for the Paralympic Games with the International Paralympic Committee and external providers.

Canoe slalom action at Tokyo 2020 is due to take place at the Kasai Canoe Slalom Centre from July 26 to 31, with canoe sprint and Para-canoe competition scheduled to be held at Sea Forest Waterway from August 3 to 8 and September 3 to 5, respectively.
