Sweden's Elias Ranefur produced an upset to beat Serbia’s Aleksandar Karakašević in preliminary round two of the men's singles event at the International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) Hungarian Open in Budapest.

Having received a first-round bye, Ranefur defeated his opponent, ranked 86 places above him in the world rankings at 121, 11-8, 13-15, 11-9, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7 at Budapest Olympic Hall.

The win sets up a clash tomorrow with Japan's Yukiya Uda, who overcame Denmark's Tobias Rasmussen 11-6, 8-11, 11-9, 6-11, 11-8, 12-10.

Ranefur's compatriots Anton Kallberg and Jon Persson also progressed in the same session, with the former beating Turkey's Ibrahim Gunduz 10-12, 11-7, 11-3, 9-11, 11-5, 11-9 and the latter defeating Serbia's Dimitrije Levajac 11-7, 9-11, 11-6, 11-8, 11-6.

In preliminary round one of the women's singles event, home player Bernadett Balint lost 6-11, 8-11, 7-11, 11-6, 7-11 to France's Audrey Zarif.

Awaiting Zarif in round two is The Netherlands' Britt Eerland, who received a bye.

Fellow Frenchwoman Yuan Jia Nan is also through to the second stage after beating Argentina's Camila Arguelles 11-4, 11-7, 13-15, 11-4, 11-6.

Next up for her is the Czech Republic's Hana Matelová.
