Bulgaria beat to Spain to dump the number eight seeds out of the men's tournament at the European Team Badminton Championships and book their place in the quarter-finals.

Having trailed 2-1 after the singles clashes, Bulgaria took both doubles encounters to secure a stunning 3-2 win.

Bulgaria then had three points from four games and their fate depended on the outcome of the Italy-Croatia match.

They needed an Italian win and they duly got it, with a 4-1 Italy triumph ensuring Bulgaria advanced as winners of Group 8 in Liévin in France.

The other seeded team to fall in the men's competition were Finland - a 5-0 thrashing of Slovenia not enough to save them in Group 7.

Having trailed 2-0 after the first two singles matches, Ukraine beat Portugal 3-2 to maintain their 100 per cent record and finish top of the group.

Seven of the eight group winners in the men's competition take a 100 per cent record into the quarter-finals, which start tomorrow.

Denmark, seeking an eighth consecutive title, will face Germany, Bulgaria play Russia, Ukraine are up against France and The Netherlands meet England.

In the women's tournament, Denmark look strong again and picked up a third 5-0 win in a row as they dispatched Estonia to top Group 1 and reach the quarter-finals.
