The leader of the men's International Ski Federation Freestyle Ski World Cup standings in the halfpipe competition failed to qualify for the latest round of the series in Calgary today after a catastrophic second run.

Aaron Blunck of the United States, who delivered what was described as one of the "all time great" freestyle skiing performances to win the men's event in Mammoth Mountain in the last round of the series had a performance of the other extreme at Canada Olympic Park today as he crashed out after scoring just 11 points in the second run.

Blunck's first run score was a healthy 79.80 points but his horrific second run meant he finished outside the top 10 and failed to qualify.

Competitors top scores count towards qualification and the top three in the men's event were David Wise of the US with 92.40 points, Gus Kenworthy, the 2014 Olympic silver medallist competing for America but who now represents Britain, with 90.20 and Lyman Currier of the US with 90.00.

In the women's event, the World Cup leader Valeriya Demidova of Russia qualified in third place with a score of 84.60 points.

Ahead of her in the qualification standings were Rachael Karker of Canada in second on 86.20 points and Eileen Gu of China, who scored 90.00.

Eight women qualified for the halfpipe final, due to take place, along with the men's finals in that discipline, on Friday (February 14).

Tomorrow sees the focus turn to slopestyle, with qualification for the men's and women's finals in that discipline.
