The Papua New Guinea Olympic Committee (PNGOC) has held a Games preparation workshop to help National Federations develop plans for major events to be held from 2021 to 2024.

More than 80 representatives, including athletes, coaches and officials, attended the workshop in Port Moresby.

It was the first in a series of events due to be staged by the PNGOC this year.

The workshops aim to ensure National Federations are properly prepared for major events, including the Olympic Games.

The 2022 Commonwealth Games in Birmingham, the 2023 Pacific Games in the Solomon Islands and Paris 2024 are among the key competitions set to be held during the 2021-2024 period.

PNGOC deputy secretary general Andrew Lepani said the organisation was working on a specific team Papua New Guinea plan for the upcoming major events.

"At the PNGOC, we continue to provide opportunities to assist our National Federations to build their capacity in administration and coaching, which in turn builds up the capacity of their sport, leading to better and consistent performances on the world stage," Lepani told attendees at the workshop, according to the Post Courier.

"We have identified the areas we need to improve and we hope that you have reviewed your own performances from 2019 as well, and are already looking to adjust your goals and plans for this next quadrennial."
