Indonesia's men's side began the defence of their Badminton Asia Team Championships title by beating South Korea 4-1 in Manila today.

Anthony Sinisuka Ginting set the Indonesians on their way to victory in the Group A clash with a 24-22, 19-21, 21-16 singles win over Heo Kwang-hee at Rizal Memorial Coliseum.

Their advantage was doubled when the pairing of Marcus Fernaldi Gideon and Kevin Sanjaya Sukamuljo beat Choi Sol-gyu and Kim Won-ho 21-14, 21-16, but Son Wan-ho kept South Korea's hopes alive thanks to a 21-16, 27-25 triumph at the expense of Jonatan Christie.

It was Fajar Alfian and Muhammad Rian Ardianto who would seal Indonesia's success after defeating Na Sung-seung and Wang Chan 21-10, 21-14.

Team-mate Shesar Hiren Rhustavito then made the final score 4-1 having come from behind to down Kim Dong-hoon 15-21, 21-13, 21-14.

Irrespective of the result, both Indonesia and South Korea have advanced to the knockout stage as they are the only two teams in Group A.

The two teams will meet tomorrow to determine the winner of Group B.

There were also wins today for hosts the Philippines and Thailand.

The Philippines overcame Singapore 3-2 in Group C, successfully bouncing back from their 5-0 drubbing against Chinese Taipei yesterday.

Thailand, meanwhile, beat Japan 4-1 in the solitary Group D match.

The one women's contest held today saw Indonesia thump the Philippines 5-0 in Group Y to book their place in the knockout stage.

Thailand, 5-0 winners over the Philippines yesterday, are also through to the next round and will face Indonesia tomorrow to decide which team tops the table.
