Shauna Coxsey has become the first British sport climber to be announced for the country's team ahead of Tokyo 2020.

Coxsey, a two-time overall World Cup winner in bouldering, will be part of the sport’s debut at the Olympics this summer.

The 27-year-old is the country’s most successful athlete in climbing after adding two bronze medals at the 2019 Climbing World Championships.

Coxsey said: “I am really excited to be part of Team GB and to have the privilege of joining so many incredible athletes to represent our country and sport climbing on the world's biggest sporting stage."

The sport will see three different disciplines in Tokyo with Coxsey’s speciality, bouldering comprising of tackling a fixed 4.5m wall over a given route.

The other disciplines take place over a 15m wall with speed seeing two climbers go head to head with the winner being the fastest to the top.

Lead sees the climbers have an allocated time to climb as high as they can.

Coxsey is the 20th athlete to officially be selected for Team GB for Tokyo 2020, joining 14 sailors and five canoeists.

Team GB Chef de Mission for Tokyo 2020 Mark England said: “Today marks a moment of history for the sport of climbing in the UK with its first selected Olympic athlete in Shauna Coxsey.

“It’s not only exciting for Team GB to be welcoming a new Olympic sport on the journey to Tokyo 2020 but to also announce an athlete of the talent and calibre of Shauna.

“Climbing is set to be one of the showpiece events for fans watching the Games this summer and in Shauna we have a World Champion and a fantastic ambassador for the sport in the UK.”

The climbing events will take place from August 4 to 7.
