A record-breaking crowd of 13,320 fans were treated to an overtime thriller as the United States squeezed past Canada to take the Rivalry Series 4-1.

The attendance eclipsed the previous record for a women's national team match played on American soil by more than 3,000.

The game was played at Handa Center in Anaheim, known best for being the home of the Anaheim Ducks of the National Hockey League.

Megan Bozek scored the decisive goal 42 second into overtime after the countries were tied at 3-3 at the end of regulation time.

Starting the game with an unassailable 3-1 lead in the five-game series, the US got off to a perfect start when Hilary Knight gave them the lead inside three minutes.

Jill Saulnier and Loren Gabel responded to put Canada ahead, but a Dani Cameranesi goal ensured the first quarter ended 2-2.

Mélodie Daoust restored Canada's lead, but Monique Lamoureux-Morando scored 11 minutes from time to send the game to overtime.

The Americans started overtime with a four-on-three powerplay and it proved crucial, with Bozek winning the game.

The Rivalry Series was introduced last season and was expanded from three games to five this time around.

Three games were played in Canada and two in the US.

With only two exceptions, Canada and the US have clashed in the final of every International Ice Hockey Federation (IIHF) Women’s World Championship and Olympic Winter Games.

The US beat Canada on a shoot-out at Pyeongchang 2018 and beat Finland in the final of last year's IIHF Women’s World Championship - the Finns had knocked Canada out in the semi-finals.
