Australia and China have qualified for the play-off round of the Asian Football Confederation (AFC) Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament after both claimed comprehensive wins today.

China booked their place in the final stage of qualification for Tokyo 2020 by thrashing Chinese Taipei 5-0 at Campbelltown Stadium in Sydney.

Wang Shanshan continued her triumphant return to the team with a brace, while Tang Jiali, Wu Haiyan and Li Ying also got their names on the scoresheet in a stunning five-goal first-half blitz to secure a second win from as many matches in Group B.

Later in the day at the same venue, Australia thumped Thailand 6-0 to also make it two victories out of two.

An Emily van Egmond hat-trick, a Kyah Simon brace and a further goal from substitute Hayley Raso gave the hosts the handsome win they needed to retain top spot in Group B on goal difference.

It means only a draw is required against China on Thursday (February 13) for Ante Milicic’s side to finish as Group B winners.

Today’s results mark the end of the road for Chinese Taipei and Thailand, who have finished in third and fourth place in the standings, respectively.

Australia and China join South Korea and Vietnam, the top two teams from Group A, in the AFC Women’s Olympic Qualification Tournament play-off round, due to take place on March 6 and 11.

South Korea will face the Group B runners-up, while Vietnam will meet the Group B winners.

The winners of the two-legged ties will join home nation Japan in the Tokyo 2020 women’s football tournament.
