Five Greco-Roman finals were set up on day one of the European Wrestling Championships in Rome after hotly contested semi-final bouts in five of the 10 weight categories.

In the heaviest category - 130 kilograms - the reigning world and European champion, Turkey's Riza Kayaalp, was knocked out in the quarter-finals by Ukraine's Mykola Kuchmii, who would go on to lose against Romania's Alin Alexuc-Ciurariu in the semi-finals at PalaPellicone.

In the other bout before the final, Georgia's Levan Arabuli beat Finland's Arvi Martin Savolainen to set up a gold-medal match against the Romanian.

In the lightest category of 55kg, Bulgaria's 18-year-old Edmond Armen Nazaryan will meet Russia's Vitalii Kabaloev in the final after defeating Eldaniz Azizli of Azerbaijan 7-5. 

The Russian made it to the final after defeating Georgia's Nugzari Tsurtsumia on points. 

Russia will also feature in the 63kg final after Ibragim Labazanov won comfortably against Romania's Mihai Radu Mihut.

He will face Belarusian Maksim Nehoda, who defeated Norway's Stig-André Berge.

Hungary's Zotlan Levai emphatically defeated Volodymyr Yakovliev of Ukraine in the 77kg category and will fight Sanan Suleymanov of Azerbaijan in the final after his win over Armenia's Karapet Chalyan.

Ukraine defeated Russia in the 87kg class after Semen Novikov won 6-3 on points against Aleksandr Andreevitch Komarov to set up a gold-medal match with Hungary's Viktor Lőrincz, who defeated Islam Abbasov of Azerbaijan in the other semi-final.

Day two of seven will see the other Greco-Roman weight categories set up their finals, with the finals set up today also taking place.
