South Africa's triple world champion, Roland Schoeman, has received a one-year ban after testing positive for a prohibited substance.

The swimmer, who has competed at four successive Olympics between 2000 and 2012, was tested with GW501516 in his system, classed as a hormone and metabolic modulators.

As his out-of-competition test came in May 2019, his suspension will end on 17 May 2020, giving him an opportunity to qualify for his fifth Games, having failed to make Rio 2016.

The 39-year-old won 4x100m relay gold in Athens in 2004 - the only gold for the nation at that year's Olympics.

The World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) banned the substance in 2013.

This test was conducted just a month before that of Australian swimmer Shayna Jack who faces a four-year ban for alleged use of non-steroid anabolic agent Ligandrol.

The International Swimming Federation (FINA) has had a few swimmers with recent doping bans with Japanese swimmer Takeharu Fujimori returning from a four-month ban in November.

The biggest doping case in recent swimming history has been that of China's Sun Yang, who is still awaiting the decision of his potential eight-year-ban with the Court of Arbitration for Sport.

Swimming competitions start at Tokyo 2020 on July 25.
