Moscow has been awarded the hosting rights for the 2023 European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships.

The Russian capital was chosen to host the event by the European Union of Gymnastics (UEG) during its latest Executive Committee meeting in Lausanne.

The 2023 Championships will be the fourth to be held in Russia as Moscow played host in 2005 and 2006, while Nizhny Novgorod staged the 2012 edition of the event.

Russia's hosting of the European Rhythmic Gymnastics Championships is unlikely to be affected by a series of sanctions imposed on the country by the World Anti-Doping Agency (WADA) as punishment for the manipulation of data from the Moscow Laboratory.

Russia will be banned from staging major competitions if the Court of Arbitration for Sport upholds WADA's decision, but the rule only applies to multi-sport events and World Championships.

Kyiv is due to stage this year's European Rhythmic Championships, before the event moves to Varna in Bulgaria in 2021 and Tel Aviv in 2022.

The UEG selected Antalya in Turkey as the venue for the 2023 European Artistic Gymnastics Championships.

It will be the first time Turkey has staged a European Championships in the artistic discipline.

The 2018 event formed part of the inaugural multi-sport European Championships in Glasgow.

Artistic gymnastics is also on the programme for the second European Championships in Munich in 2022.
