Germany’s Anna Berreiter won the women’s singles race for the first time in the International Luge Federation (FIL) World Cup in her home race on the final day at Oberhof.

Berreiter previously made the podium for the first time earlier this season at Whistler in Canada, finishing runner-up to Tatyana Ivanova, who was her closest competitor for the gold in Germany.

The 20-year-old had a perfect day, finishing with the top time on both runs, with her second run being quickest through all splits.

Ivanova was only 0.016 seconds off the German in run one but despite being quicker on run two, would only post the third quickest, finishing 0.040 seconds away from the winner.

United States’ Summer Britcher moved up two places to capture bronze in a tight contest with Julia Taubitz of Germany.

Britcher sat in fifth behind Taubitz and eventual sixth place Kendija Aparjode of Latvia but pulled out one of the biggest improvements on run two to post the second-quickest time, ensuring a podium 0.027 seconds ahead of fourth.

Ivanova’s silver was enough to take her back to the top of the World Cup standings after losing the lead to Taubitz in Sigulda last time out when the German won her second race in a row.

A distance off the top two is fellow Russian Viktoriia Demchenko who finished fifth in Oberhof.

Berreiter is the only person outside the top two this season to win a World Cup race.

In the team relay later in the day, Germany made it two golds on the final day after holding off the United States by 0.070 seconds, going to the top of the relay rankings.

The team of Berreiter, yesterday’s men’s singles champion Johannes Ludwig and men’s doubles champions Tobias Wendl and Tobias Arlt were the fourth different nation in four races to win the event.

The Latvian quartet were comfortably in the bronze medal position, 0.1 seconds behind the Germans and a further 0.375 seconds ahead of fourth place Russia.

The next leg of the World Cup will take place in Winterberg in Germany after the FIL World Championships which are set to take place on February 15 and 16.
