Upsets continued today in the preliminary rounds of the German Open, an International Table Tennis Federation (ITTF) World Tour Platinum event.

Following a number of shock defeats yesterday at the GETEC Arena in Magdeburg, women's world number 109, Lee Zion of South Korea, overcame Hitomi Sato 11-6, 8-11, 11-7, 11-7, 6-11, 11-7. 

The Japanese player is the world number 17 and received a doubles bronze medal at last year's World Championships in Budapest. 

Stephanie Loeuillette of France then defeated Bernadette Szocs of Romania, coming back from two games down to triumph 8-11, 6-11, 13-11, 11-2, 6-11, 11-9, 11-8.

Loeuillette is 80 places below Szocs in the world rankings at number 99. 

Zhai Yujia continued his impressive run in the men's contest, having beaten the world number 19, Wong Chun Ting of Hong Kong, yesterday. 

Today, the 179th-ranked athlete recorded an 11-5, 6-11, 11-7, 11-8, 12-10 win against Jakub Dyjas of Poland. 

Competition continues tomorrow with the round of 32 in the men's and women's singles and the round of 16 in the doubles.
