Nine places at this year’s Men’s World Floorball Championships will be up for grabs at this week’s European qualification events, which are due to begin tomorrow.

Danish town Frederikshavn, Slovakian city Poprad and Liepāja in Latvia are all set to play host to tournaments that will see eight teams separated into two groups.

The first day of competition will focus solely on Liepāja, where Group E is made up of Czech Republic, Spain, The Netherlands and Liechtenstein and Group F comprises Germany, hosts Latvia, Austria and France.

The events in Frederikshavn and Poprad are scheduled to start on Thursday (January 30) and finish a day later than that in Liepāja, on Sunday (February 2).

In Frederikshavn, Group A features Sweden, Poland, Slovenia and Ukraine and Group B includes Denmark, Estonia, Great Britain and Iceland.

Poprad will provide the setting for Group C, with Switzerland facing Russia, Belgium and sole Africa representatives Ivory Coast, as well as Group D in which Norway, Slovakia, Hungary and Italy will be battling it out for success.

For the first time, a new playing system will be introduced in the qualification events.

There will be four days of play, reduced from five, and three teams will qualify from each qualification event.

Teams will play against the others in their group once, with the top sides in each group guaranteed qualification.

On the final day, there will be a playoff round of cross-over matches between the groups' two winners, two runners-up, two third-place finishers and two fourth-place finishers.

Those matches involving the two runners-up will determine the third qualifier from each event.

A total of 35 teams have registered for the 2020 Men’s World Floorball Championships, which are due to take place in Helsinki from December 4 to 12.

Sixteen countries will be participating in the 13th edition of the event, where hosts Finland will be looking to make it three consecutive triumphs having won the 2016 edition in Latvia’s capital Riga and the 2018 edition in Czech Republic’s capital Prague.

Qualification for Asian and Oceanian countries is scheduled to be held in Thailand’s capital Bangkok from March 2 to 7.
