Switzerland's Siri Wigger and Norway's Nikolai Holmboe earned titles on the first day of cross-country skiing competition at Lausanne 2020, with both athletes holding off the challenge of Swedish rivals.

Holmboe emerged as one of the favourites in the men's cross freestyle competition early on, topping the qualification standings.

The 17-year-old settled for second place in his semi-final behind Sweden's Edvin Anger at the Vallée de Joux Cross-Country Centre.

The two would tussle again in the final, with Holmboe emerging the winner.

The Norwegian achieved a time of 4min 9.97sec to claim the gold medal, overcoming Anger by 1.77 seconds.

Albin Aastroem rounded off the podium, with the Swedish skier clocking 4:13.51 in third place.

Swedish skiers were also forced to settle for silver and bronze in the women’s competition, where home favourite Wigger claimed gold.

The top three skiers finished within two seconds in the final.

Wigger had the fastest finish to win the Youth Olympic title in a time of 4:39.95, having overtaken her Swedish rivals in the closing metres.

Maerta Rosenberg and Tove Ericsson finished 0.77 and 1.15 seconds behind the winner, respectively, to complete the medal positions.

"I wanted to be in a good position, but not necessarily first or second," Wigger said.

"I just wanted to have some energy for the finish.

"I was tired but it was OK."

Wigger and Holmboe will target further success tomorrow, with sprint events set to take place.

The Swedish team will hope for revenge after narrowly missing out on gold today.
