Sestriere in Italy is hosting the latest women's International Ski Federation (FIS) Alpine Skiing World Cup this weekend, with giant slalom and parallel giant slalom taking centre-stage.

The skier to watch is Slovakia's Petra Vlhová, with the giant slalom world champion having enjoyed back-to-back wins on the tour, with victory in Flachau, Austria, this week and Zagreb, Croatia, earlier this month.

Sweden’s Anna Swenn-Larsson was runner-up in Austria, with Olympic champion Mikaela Shiffrin from the United States rounding off the podium.

Throw in a parallel slalom victory for Vlhová in St Moritz, Switzerland, in mid-December and you have a skier in exceptional form.

However, the overall standings are currently topped by Shiffrin on 886 points, with Vlhová in second (613) and Italy’s Federica Brignone in third (565) after 16 of 40 races.

Shiffrin leads the way in slalom and is second in giant slalom.

The giant slalom competition takes place tomorrow, with parallel giant slalom on Sunday.
