Team Kerri Einarson and Team Nina Roth have advanced from the women's A-qualifiers and into the playoffs at curling's Canadian Open in Yorkton.

Einarson scored three in the eighth end to beat Scotland's Team Eve Muirhead 6-5, while Tabitha Peterson skipped the American-based Team Roth to an extra-end win, by the same scoreline, over Sweden's Team Anna Hasselborg during today's action at the Gallagher Centre.

Both Team Einarson and Team Roth completed 3-0 runs through the triple knockout stage of the Grand Slam of Curling (GSOC) tournament.

Peterson, who normally throws third, has moved up to skip while Roth is away on maternity leave.

"It feels really good," Team Einarson third Valerie Sweeting said.

"We've grinded it out in tiebreakers the last, well, all the Slams I think.

"We got fortunate to have a shot for three there in the end, but Eve's team was playing really well and it was a really good game back and forth.

"We just capitalised in the end there."

The Canadian Open is the lone GSOC event to use the triple knockout format, where teams must win three games before they lose three games in order to advance to the quarter-finals.

Each loss drops teams to a lower bracket until they are eliminated.

Two A-qualifiers, three B-qualifiers and three C-qualifiers reach the quarter-finals in both men's and women's divisions.

In the men's event, Team Glenn Howard staved off an early exit after defeating Team Niklas Edin of Sweden 4-1.

The 57-year-old Howard, who has won 14 GSOC titles as skip, lost his first couple of games in the tournament to Brad Jacobs and Mike McEwen, respectively, to fall into the C-event.

Team Jason Gunnlaugson also improved to a 1-2 record, ousting home-province favourites Team Kirk Muyres 5-3 in the other C-event quarter-final.

Team Korey Dropkin, meanwhile, advanced to the playoffs with a 7-4 victory over Team Peter de Cruz of Switzerland in a B-qualifier.

Action continues in Yorkton tomorrow.
