International Blind Sports Federation (IBSA) Goalball have announced that Port Said in Egypt has been chosen to host this year's African Championships - the last qualifying event for the the Paralympic Games in Tokyo. 

The competition, to be organised by the Egyptian Blind Sports Association, is due to to take place from February 28 until March 6.

A group of 12 men and women's teams are expected to compete. 

The Championships will be the sixth qualifier to take place for Tokyo 2020.

It follows regional competitions in Lima in Peru; Rostock in Germany, and Chiba in Japan as well as the International Qualifier in Fort Wayne in the United States.

The 2018 IBSA Goalball World Championships in Malmö in Sweden also delivered qualification for the top three teams.

As well as the title on offer in Port Said, the gold medallist will secure their ticket to Tokyo 2020. 

"We are grateful to the Local Organising Committee for their bid to host the African Championships," Kari Rasanen, chairperson of the IBSA Goalball Committee, said.

"We have done a lot of work in recent years to attract new countries, players, referees and coaches in the region into goalball through various seminars, and by donating equipment, to give the people on the ground the resources they need to build their own programmes.

"I am sure Port Said 2020 will be an excellent event which will showcase the growing professionalism and standard of play in Africa."
