The Algerian Olympic Committee (COA) held an Olympic Day celebration in the coastal city of Béjaïa.

Taking place next to the Mediterranean Sea, the event featured sporting demonstrations and was attended by Algerian Olympic medallists Soraya Haddad and Abderrahmane Hammad.

Judoka Haddad won bronze in the women's under-52 kilograms class at Beijing 2008, while Hammad won a medal of the same colour in the men's high jump at Sydney 2000.

Mustapha Berraf, the President of the COA who also leads the Association of National Olympic Committees of Africa, was another in attendance.

Béjaïa was selected as it is considered a "breeding ground" of Algerian sporting talent with athletes from the city achieving strong results.

The sporting demonstrations, carried out by young athletes, included basketball, handball, volleyball, athletics, karate, badminton, boxing, cycling, tennis and gymnastics.

An "Olympic race" was also held in Tichy, a nearby town.

This attracted 1,200 participants.
