Kenyan Sports Minister Amina Mohamed has named an 18-strong steering committee for the 2020 Olympic Games in Tokyo.

Mohamed will chair the group, which will help the Kenyan team with its preparations for the Games in the Japanese capital.

National Olympic Committee of Kenya (NOCK) President Paul Tergat is among the officials chosen for a place on the committee by the sports cabinet secretary.

Tergat will be joined by the likes of Kenya National Sports Council Chairman Nderitu Gikaria and Athletics Kenya President Jackson Tuwei.

Kenya Volleyball Federation President Waithaka Kioni, named as Chef de Mission of Kenya's Tokyo 2020 team earlier this year, will also sit on the committee.

Sports principal secretary Kirimi Kaberia will be the alternate to the chairperson.

Sports officials in Kenya have praised the early creation of the committee, aimed at helping to ensuring the African nation performs well at Tokyo 2020 following the country's problems at Rio 2016.

The NOCK last month approved a budget of KSh600 million (£4.5 million/€5.8 million/€5.3 million) to help support Kenya at the Games.

Kioni had earlier promised that every coin used would be accounted for to avoid any risk of a repeat of the corruption scandal that marred the nation's appearance at Rio 2016.

Several top officials ended up in court after claims that money meant for Kenyan athletes in Brazil had been misused.

Missing kit and tickets being sold at inflated prices were among the allegations made.
