Belgium will be represented by nine athletes in seven sports at next month’s Winter Youth Olympic Games (YOG) in Lausanne, it has been announced.

Freestyle skier Noa Spoelders and Alpine skier Louis Masquelier-Page are joined on the team by ice hockey players Anke Steeno and Tibo Van Reeth, short track speed skater Warre Van Damme, skeleton athletes Aline Pelckmans and Colin Freeling, speed skater Fran Vanhoutte and snowboarder Evy Poppe.

The Belgian Olympic Committee (BOIC) Board of Directors announced the selection following a meeting.

Evaluating the potential of the athletes, Belgium’s Chef de Mission Gert Van Looy said: "For the BOIC, the Youth Olympic Games are an opportunity to see our young top sport talents evolve within a multi-disciplinary international competition and to evaluate the potential of Team Belgium athletes.

"Together with the communities, we are investigating how we can support and guide these young top talents in their future sport careers."

The Lausanne 2020 Winter YOG is due to take place from January 9 to 22 and will see 1,880 athletes, aged between 15 and 18, from more than 70 countries compete.

Competition will be held in the Swiss cantons of Vaud, Valais, Grisons and neighbouring France.

It will be the third edition of the Winter YOG, with the first having been hosted by Austrian city Innsbruck in 2012 and second having been staged in Norwegian town Lillehammer in 2016.

Belgium won one medal at Lillehammer 2016, thanks to freestyle skier Xander Vercammen's second-place finish in the boys' ski cross event.

Stijn Desmet was a gold medallist in the short track speed skating team relay, but that was a mixed National Olympic Committees event.
