Lasting until May 28, the tournament is expected to feature eight universities from around Australia, with men and women's teams participating from each. 

Each competing university will have the opportunity to host and livestream the matches. 

The League is scheduled to culminate in a finals weekend, determining Australia's number one basketball university. 

Endorsed by Basketball Australia, and supported by the respective State Basketball Associations, the creation of the UBL will also provide unique work-integrated learning opportunities that will enhance the students' academic development with practical experience.

"Basketball is played by more university students than any other sport on campus in Australia, and this league will provide a unique pathway for student-athletes, with the innovative work-integrated learning opportunities that will directly complement their learning pathways as student-athletes," UniSport Australia chief executive Mark Sinderberry said.

"This pathway will also recognise the significant role student engagement plays in wellbeing and positive learning outcomes. 

"In addition, it provides a wonderful opportunity for universities to capture the pride and connection students past and present enjoy through their university careers."

Three of the participating universities are from Melbourne - La Trobe University, The University of Melbourne and Victoria University. 

Murdoch University in Perth, The University of Sydney, The University of Western Australia, University of the Sunshine Coast and University of Technology Sydney are the remaining institutions involved.
