Edmonton has been named as host of the International Federation of American Football (IFAF) World Under-20 Championship in 2024.

Football Canada was awarded the event earlier this year by IFAF, before inviting a bid process to determine which city would host competition.

The organisation claimed it received inquiries from five provincial bodies, before ultimately partnering with Football Alberta to take the event to Edmonton.

"With Edmonton’s tradition of embracing global competitions, we anticipate that this tournament will elevate the profile of international football," Football Canada President Jim Mullin said.

"We have conducted the most thorough bid process in the history of this event, Football Alberta has paid attention to all of the details and will be a fantastic host."

The tournament will be the seventh edition of American football's World Junior Championships, and the first to switch from an under-19 age grouping and from a two-year to a four-year hosting cycle.

Organisers of the 2024 tournament will take part in the upcoming 2020 event in the United States as preparation, alongside transferring the knowledge from their successful hosting of the Women’s World Championship in 2017.

"Edmonton is a great football city and IFAF recognises that Football Canada is a reliable and quality global host," said Richard MacLean, the IFAF President, following the announcement.

"They will do an amazing job hosting the event."

The event is expected to feature teams from Asian, Oceania, European and Americas regions.

A decision has yet to be taken on whether the competition will feature six or eight nations.

Canada has won the last two editions of the event, with their team having won the under-19 title in front of 32,515 fans at the Olympic Stadium in Mexico City in July last year.

USA Football are scheduled to host the 2020 event in Ohio, the last edition of the event with an under-19 age group.
