Tarek Momen of Egypt powered to victory at the Professional Squash Association (PSA) Men's World Championship in Doha.

Momen's opponent at the at the Khalifa International Tennis and Squash Complex was Paul Coll, the first New Zealander to compete in a men's World Championship final in 33 years.

It was a comfortable victory for Momen in the end, with the third seed triumphing 11-8, 11-3, 11-4 to claim his first world title. 

"If I tell you how many times I imagined making this speech my whole life, it's countless, and now I just don’t know what to say, it's so hard to digest," Momen said.

"I just worked so hard for this. 

"For years, I've been trying and trying, I came up this close but then it didn't happen for me."

Momen added: "I haven't won a Platinum event and the first major I ever win gets to be the World Championship, it's unbelievable."

His victory also made history in another way. 

He and compatriot Raneem El Welily became the first married couple to become world champions in the same sport, with El Welily topping the podium in the women's event last month in Cairo. 

"I only realised this morning we were the only married couple to become world champions," Momen said.

"We are privileged to have achieved something, and I'm so happy we did it."

Momen has now qualified for the the season-ending PSA World Tour Finals, scheduled for June.
