Two-time defending women's champions Mali claimed back-to-back wins on the opening day of the International Basketball Federation 3x3 Africa Cup in Kampala.

Mali opened their Pool B campaign with a 21-8 victory over Egypt at the Lugogo Hockey Pitch before they defeated Botswana 22-7.

Today's other match in Pool B saw Egypt beat Benin 21-11.

In Pool A, Nigeria and hosts Uganda both made winning starts.

Nigeria overcame Kenya 21-20 before Uganda registered a 21-9 victory over Burundi, who came through the qualifying draw earlier in the day at the expense of Mauritius and Djibouti.

Uganda also made a good start to the men's event, beating Mauritius 21-5 and Nigeria 15-14 to qualify for the quarter-finals as Pool D winners.

Nigeria preceded their narrow loss by defeating Mauritius 18-15 and go through to the last eight as runners-up.

Madagascar qualified as the Pool C table toppers after overcoming Burundi 21-7 and the Democratic Republic of the Congo 19-18.

The Democratic Republic of the Congo recovered from their defeat to down Burundi 21-13 and progress as the second-place finishers.

Pools A and B are due to take place tomorrow, when round-robin action concludes.

All the knockout matches in both the men's and women's events are scheduled for Sunday (November 10).
