Four countries tasted victory on the opening day of the G4 Extra European Taekwondo Championships in Bari.

Among the quartet of winners at the Italian city's PalaFlorio was Turkey's Rukiye Yildirim, a 2019 world bronze medallist, in the women's under-49 kilograms category.

She beat Germany's Ela Aydin in the final, with the bronze medals going to Russia's Elizaveta Ryadninskaya and Kyriaki Kouttouki of Cyprus.

There were also triumphs today for Russia's Tatiana Kudashova, Italy's Vito Dell'Aquila and Belgium's Jaouad Achab.

Kudashova, the 2019 world silver medallist, defeated Turkey's Zeliha Ağrıs in the women's under-53kg final.

Dell'Aquila overcame Ireland's Jack Woolley in the men's under-58kg final and Achab prevailed at the expense of Croatia's Lovre Brečić in the men's under-63kg final.

France's Yasmina Aziez and Serbia's Tijana Bogdanović were the women's under-53kg bronze medallists.

The men's under-58kg bronze medals went to Azerbaijan's Gashim Magomedov and Spain's Jesús Tortosa Cabrera.

Rounding off the men's under-63kg podium were Spain's Marcos Caballero and Hungary's Levente Jozsa.

With taekwondo dropped from the European Games programme after the inaugural edition in Baku in 2015, the event in Bari aims to compensate European athletes who would have otherwise missed out on the opportunity to collect ranking points for Tokyo 2020 Olympic qualification.
