Taylor captured his fourth - and third consecutive - world title at the International Association of Athletics Federations Championships in Doha with a best of 17.92 metres.

After his training partner Will Claye - leader of the 2019 world list with 18.14m - had taken an early lead, Taylor faced an early exit from the final after fouling his first two efforts.

But he did enough with his third attempt to earn the right to three more jumps, and secured gold with his season's best in the fifth round.

Taylor's title also marked the 100th world title by an American man in track and field history, dating back to 1983.

At the age of 20, Nye, who won world junior gold in July, added three more golds at the senior International Weightlifting Championships in Pattaya, Thailand, in the 71 kilogram division.

She became the youngest women’s world weightlifting champion from the United States, earning gold in the snatch, where she managed 112kg, the clean & jerk, where she recorded 136kg, and the total, with 248kg.

The snatch of 112kg broke five records: junior world, senior Pan American, junior Pan American, senior American and junior American, in her final year of junior eligibility.

Her total of 248kg also set an American record.

Competing in the inaugural mixed gender 4x400-metres event at the IAAF World Athletics Championships Doha 2019, the US relay team of Michael Cherry, Allyson Felix, Wil London and Courtney Okolo set a world record of 3min 09.34sec in an event that will make its Olympic debut next year.

With the win, Felix earned a record 12th world gold, moving one clear of Jamaica's Usain Bolt.

Felix went on to add a 13th gold as part of the winning 4x400m squad, having run in the opening round.
