Germany's men clinch maiden title at IBSA Goalball European Championships

Hosts Germany secured their first men's International Blind Sports Federation Goalball European Championship title with victory over Ukraine in the final in Rostock.

Germany were in impressive form as they despatched their Ukrainian rivals 6-2 at StadtHalle.

The triumph handed Germany a maiden European crown and denied surprise-package Ukraine a fairytale triumph.

Paralympic gold medallists Turkey clinched the women's honours after they fought back with an improved second-half display to see off Israel.

The Turkish team trailed 5-3 at the break but rallied after the restart to record an 8-6 victory.

Turkey had earlier been denied the bronze medal in the men's event as they were beaten 7-6 by Paralympic champions Lithuania.

In the women's bronze medal match, Britain thrashed Germany 8-2.

When British skaters Jayne Torvill and Christopher Dean won the Olympic gold medal in ice dance at Sarajevo 1984 with 12 perfect 6.0s from every judge, for their interpretation of Maurice Ravel's Boléro, an important member of their team was singer-actor Michael Crawford. Crawford, who had played Frank Spencer in British sitcom Some Mothers Do 'Ave 'Em and the title role in the musical The Phantom of the Opera, had become a mentor to the pair in 1981 and went on to help them create their Olympic routine. Crawford said he “taught them how to act". He was present with their trainer Betty Callaway at the ringside at Sarajevo as they created one of the most iconic moments in Olympic history.
