The winners of the Tokyo 2020 Open Innovation Challenge will be invited to the Alibaba Cloud APSARA Conference in Hangzhou next September, the Tokyo 2020 Organising Committee has announced.

The challenge was launched last month as a technology competition aimed at creating an innovative spectator event and bids to encourage people to get involved in the Tokyo 2020 Olympic Games.

Tokyo 2020 has now announced the gold prize award in partnership with Alibaba Cloud and Intel.

The conference is in September 2020, with all travel and accommodation costs covered by the organisers and the gold prize winner will also be offered a chance to speak during the conference.

The Open Innovation Challenge is geared towards spectator experience at basketball (3x3), BMX freestyle, skateboarding and sport climbing events.

Participants are invited to develop and submit prototypes of any type of technology application leveraging the latest Cloud and artificial intelligence technologies, including mobile, web-based or robot applications.

Silver prize winners will receive tickets to Tokyo 2020 events and those claiming bronze prizes will be awarded official licensed Tokyo 2020 merchandise.

All the winners will have the opportunity to present their ideas during the Olympic Games, held between July 24 to August 9 next year.

For the challenge, Alibaba Cloud will provide cloud computing services while Intel will lend a variety of assets, including the Intel® Neural Compute Stick 2 and the Intel® Distribution of OpenVINO™ toolkit.

Participants will be jointly reviewed by Tokyo 2020, Alibaba Cloud and Intel.

The closing date for applications is October 13 and a document screening stage will run between October 14 to November 1, when the results will be announced.

Those selected to advance will undergo a training session on November 9 before a final examination on February 22 2020.

The training will be held in Tokyo and the programme will be in a lecture format conducted in Japanese.

An English training document will be organised for those who do not speak Japanese.
