Portugal progressed to the women’s semi-finals at the European Table Tennis Championships for the first time after upsetting second seeds Germany in Nantes.

The Portuguese team appeared on the brink of defeat after losing two of the opening three matches of their quarter-final in the French city.

Fu Yu forced a deciding match by winning 3-1 against Germany’s Nina Mittelham.

The comeback was completed by Shao Jieni, who clinched a narrow 3-2 win over Petrissa Solja to take her team into the last four.

Portugal will face the winners of the match between Ukraine and Hungary in the semi-finals.

The host nation were unable to spring a surprise in their quarter-final as they were easily beaten 3-0 by defending champions Romania.

Romania will take on Poland in the semi-finals, after they were 3-1 winners against the Netherlands.

In the men’s competition, defending champions Germany beat Slovenia 3-0 in their quarter-final match.

It set up a meeting with France in the last four.

The host nation overcame Poland 3-2.

Portugal, last year's runner-up, claimed a 3-1 win over Austria.

Their reward is a clash against Sweden, who overcame England 3-0 in their last eight match.
