UniSport Australia has announced plans for a University Basketball League (UBL) to be launched in April 2020.

The league has been endorsed by Basketball Australia and is supported by the respective State Basketball Associations.

The tournament is scheduled to take place over 10 weeks between April and September next year.

The men's and women's competitions would be played across four regions, before a finals weekend determines Australia's number one basketball university.

Unisport chief executive Mark Sinderberry said: "Basketball is played by more university students than any other sport on campus in Australia.

"This proposed league would provide a unique pathway for student-athletes, with the innovative work-integrated learning opportunities that would directly complement their learning pathways as student-athletes.

"This pathway would also recognise the significant role student engagement plays in well-being and positive learning outcomes.

"In addition, it provides a wonderful opportunity for universities to capture the pride and connection students past and present enjoy through their university careers.”

The UBL is expected to provide unique work integrated learning opportunities that will enhance the students' academic development with practical experience.

UniSport Australia is inviting universities to express an interest in being involved with the league's inaugural tournament.

Australia's women's team won gold at the 2019 Summer Universiade in Naples, with the men's team picking up bronze.
