The United States will be looking to defend their Walker Cup title this weekend, with the 47th edition of the biennial event at Royal Liverpool Golf Club in Hoylake.

Leading American amateurs will again go head-to-head with those from Great Britain and Ireland.

Each of the two competition days feature four foursomes matches in the morning, followed by singles in the afternoon – eight on day one and 10 on day two.

With a total of 26 points up for grabs, a team must secure 13½ to win the match outright.

The team in possession of the Walker Cup, the US on this occasion following a 19-7 home win at Los Angeles Country Club in 2017, can retain it with 13 points.

It could be a tall order for the Americans, however, given that a visiting side has not won the Walker Cup since 2007.

The US triumphed 12 years ago at Royal County Down in Northern Ireland, edging a closely fought contest 12½-11½ under a slightly shorter system.

The Walker Cup was last played at Royal Liverpool in 1983, when the US beat the British and Irish team 13½-10½.

Royal Liverpool also staged the first transatlantic match between Britain and Ireland and the US in 1921.

This would become the Walker Cup a year later.

Britain and Ireland will be captained by 53-year-old Craig Watson, the winner of the 1997 British Amateur Championship after defeating South Africa's Trevor Immelman, the 2008 Masters champion, in the final.

The team is made up of Alex Fitzpatrick, Conor Gough, Harry Hall, Thomas Plumb, Conor Purcell, Caolan Rafferty, Sandy Scott, Tom Sloman, James Sugrue and Euan Walker.

Ben Schmidt and Ben Jones are the reserves.

Watson's opposite number Nathaniel Crosby, 57, is the third-youngest winner of the US Amateur Championship, having triumphed at the age of 19 in 1981.

He will be leading a team comprising John Augenstein, Akshay Bhatia, Stewart Hagestad, Cole Hammer, Isaiah Salinda, Alex Smalley, Brandon Wu, Steven Fisk, Andy Ogletree and John Pak.

The reserves are Ricky Castillo and Chandler Phillips.
