Britain's women's team scored a golden goal winner to claim gold at the European Canoe Association Canoe Polo European Championships in Coimbra in Portugal.

Against long-time rivals Germany, the final was tied at 1-1 before Bethan Littlewood scored with a penalty to secure a seventh European title for the British.

The two sides had contested the last 13 European finals but the sides could not be split at the final whistle, with Tonie Lenz of Germany equalising Virginia Coyles' opening strike for Britain.

Italy secured bronze with a commanding 6-0 victory against France.

Germany and Britain also contested the men's senior final with defending champions Spain failing to make an impression on the medal matches in Portugal.

Another close encounter went the way of the Germans 2-1, who fought back to grab a late winner.

Ross Montgomery had given Britain the lead with his sixth goal of the tournament before Lukas Richten and Robert Pest scored to seal the European Championship title.

Italy secured a second bronze medal of the day with a 6-2 triumph against Poland.

Both of the under-21 titles were won by pre-championship favourites Germany.

In the men's final, Svante May scored twice in a 4-1 triumph against Italy.

Rene Kirchoff and Leon Konrad also netted in a commanding victory, as Vicenzo Nugnes grabbed a consolation goal for the Italians.

Switzerland claimed bronze with a 6-2 win against Spain.

The women's under-21 final saw the Germans defend their 2017 title with a 4-2 victory against Britain.

Hilke Vogt, Annika Knoepfel, Nina Hachenburg and Nele Schmalenbach were on the scoresheet for Germany, with Caitlin Fox and Katie Howes scoring for Britain.

France earned the bronze medal with a 7-0 triumph against Italy.

The next ECA Canoe Polo European Championships will be held in Buriana in Spain in 2021.
