Britain's Alyson Dixon triumphed in the women's 50 kilometre World Championships ©IAU

Alyson Dixon helped Britain to win women's team gold medal after triumphing in the individual event at the International Association of Ultrarunners (IAU) 50 kilometre World Championships in Brașov.

Dixon completed the course, consisting of a first lap of five kilometres and four laps of nine kilometres, in 3 hours 07min 20sec. 

She finished in front of compatriot Helen Davies, who crossed the line in 3:09:16.

Third place went to Spain's Alicia Perez with a time of 3:15:09.

The British first-and-second place finish was enough to see the women's team earn gold with a combined time of 9:39:33.

The United States claimed silver with 10:03:18 and Austriat he bronze with 10:19:58.

Spain's Iraitz Arrospide was the winner in the men's race, triumphing in 2:47:42.

He was followed by South Africa's Lungile Gongqa in 2:48:26 and Britain's Daniel Nash in 2:49:01. 

South Africa took the men's team gold medal after managing a combined time of 8:28:38.

Germany were second with 8:35:52, while Britain were third in 8:41:00.

Brașov became the first European city to host the one-day competition, with the previous two editions held in Doha in 2015 and 2016.

The supposedly annual event was cancelled in 2017 and 2018.

In total, 170 athletes from 31 countries will compete across the men's and women's individual and team events.
