World and Olympic road race champion Anna van der Breggen attacked on the first climb of the final lap to claim victory at the GP de Plouay in France.

The Dutchwoman, who rides for Boels-Dolmans, defended her lead for the last 12 kilometres of the 128.6km race and finished solo in a time of 3 hours 21min 54sec.

Eleven seconds behind was the United States' Coryn Rivera of Team Sunweb as she won the sprint for second place.

European champion Amy Pieters, van der Breggen's team mate and compatriot, came third.

"The climbs were following each other very quickly, making it a very hard race from the start," Van der Breggen said to Cycling News.

"We based our team tactics on that, trying to be in the front all the time to save as much energy as possible."

She added: "The team was great today, keeping us in the front all the time.

"I felt good and I like the first climb after the finish, so I tried something and it worked out.

"My sprint is not the best one, so a solo is my biggest chance to win the race."

Though she was not in Plouay, Dutchwoman Marianne Vos retains the overall lead of the International Cycling Union (UCI) Women’s WorldTour.

Italy's Marta Cavalli ranked fourth to retake the lead in the young rider classification.

The UCI Women's World Tour continues on Tuesday (September 3), with the first day of the Holland Ladies Tour.
