Belgium are winners of the jumping competition for the first time at the Longines International Equestrian Federation European Championships in Rotterdam.

The Belgian team led the overnight standings at the Rotterdam Arena having received only 11.07 penalty points.

Despite having never won a medal at the Championships before, the Belgians did not falter under pressure.

Pieter Devos, with Claire Z, received five penalty points but ultimately saw the score excluded from the final total.

It followed Jos Verlooy and Gregory Wathelet producing clear rounds on Igor and MJT Nevados S, while Jérôme Guery only received one fault on Quel Homme de Hus.

The one penalty point gave Belgium a final score of 12.07 faults, which proved enough for gold.

Seven-time champions Germany finished runners-up on 16.22, having added four penalties to their overnight total.

Britain rounded off the podium positions by ending on 21.41, nearly four faults clear of fourth-placed France.

Belgium, Britain and France would secure Tokyo 2020 qualification spots due to their finishing positions in the competition.

Three places had been available to nations yet to qualify for next year's Olympic Games.

Britain's Ben Maher leads the individual event with a score of 0.62 heading into the final on Sunday (August 25).

He is followed by Verlooy and Switzerland's Martin Fuchs, who are on 1.68 and 3.46 respectively.
